Daily Devotion for August 2, 2006

Messiah

Then he asked them, “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God. Matthew 16:15,16

“Who do you say I am?” Who we are and what we become depends on our answer to this simple question. It’s a personal question that requires a personal answer. Who Jesus is to you will determine your identity. I think our culture has a real identity crisis. We work for position and possessions and when we get them we aren’t satisfied. We attain our goals but we are empty and lonely.

That question keeps coming: “Who do you say I am?” If we refuse to answer this important question, we have still given an answer. This is not a “religious” question. It is a personal question from God. Eternity hangs on the answer I give.

If God is Creator then He knows how to give our lives meaning and purpose. His ways and thoughts are greater than ours. This simple question is a foundational question. We can build our lives on it.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light (Matthew 11:28).”

Prayer
Lord, help us to know you better so we can fulfill your purpose for our lives. Amen.
