Daily Devotion for July 27, 2006

Sometimes It Takes Chicken Soup

“Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 1 Kings 19:5

There’s more of a connection between mood and food than just spelling and sound and I kind of think it’s a God thing. Elijah was so discouraged, afraid, and exhausted, that he wanted to die, but he was awakened with this heavenly command to eat. He was provided with warm bread and water, enough to give him strength for a forty day and night journey to the sacred Mount Sinai.

I know people who do their best to manage chronic depression. It’s a genetic thing apparently. Sometimes they think there is no dosage of antidepressant/anti-anxiety medications powerful enough to place them in position to move forward in a positive way that will allow them to serve the Lord. But often in those times, a carefully chosen meal or snack can make all the difference. In these times, the provision God makes may be best understood in basic laws of nutrition and energy. If it worked for Elijah, why not with you!

Prayer:
Dear Lord, Please lend me the maturity to see past my private moods to the rich provisions you make to your followers that we may be strong in your service. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
