Everything We Need
“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:4
Relationship: a state of connectedness between people. We all have relationships; there is the relationship we have with our coworkers; there is the relationship we have with a spouse or significant other; and there is the relationship that we have with our children, just to mention a few. All of these relationships are important to us. It is through these relationships that we live, learn, grow, and care for each other here on earth. All of these relationships give us part of what we need; none of these relationships can totally meet all of our needs.
But what if we could have a relationship with one individual that could meet every one of our needs? It is kind of like one-stop shopping. In my relationship with Jesus Christ, I have all of my needs met. I am not talking about the “wants” that I have in my life; that is a subject for another time. He has given me everything that I truly need; everything else that I have is just a bonus.
Peter writes: “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (2 Peter 1: 3) The underlining is mine; look at the power in that one sentence. I find myself at times wishing for a better job or a car with significantly less than 200,000 miles on it. But truthfully, my needs have been met. I praise God for what I have and what he has done for me. It is my connectedness to Jesus that keeps me going. Oh sure, I experience bad days, and days when I wonder what sort of interesting life-twist is going to come my way next. But I have what I need to keep going.
“Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:10-11) In my relationship with Jesus my needs are met; the wants are going to have to wait…
Prayer
Father God, I know what I want; but only you know what I truly need. I praise you and give thanks to you for meeting all of my needs here on earth. And I pray that you will help me understand that I don’t always get want I want; but I always get what I need. Amen.
