Daily Devotion for October 2, 2006

Our Father

“If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” Matthew 7:11

This verse is Jesus speaking and teaching. At first it appears to be a simple question. But in most versions of the Bible this verse ends with a period or exclamation mark, not a question mark. KJV and Young’s Literal Translation have it ending in a “?”.  Is Jesus asking a question or making a statement? The question: Will God give me good things? The statement: God will give good gifts to those who ask him.

If I question whether God wants to give me good things, am I trusting God? Our heavenly Father wants us to have good gifts. It is his will to give them. We wonder if God hears our prayers. Is it possible that the small question mark in our mind keeps us from the blessings of God?

“In all unbelief there are these two things: a good opinion of one’s self and a bad opinion of God.” (Horatius Bonar)

Prayer
Lord, you are the source of all good and perfect gifts. You are our Father. Help me trust you in all things and come to you for ALL THINGS.  Amen.
