Daily Devotion for September 1, 2006

Word’s Worth

“Remind everyone of these things, and command them in God’s name to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them.” 2 Timothy 2:14

Sometimes discussions are great. They can be the only way we work out our own decisions or calm our uncertainties or explain ourselves to others. But there are so many kinds of discussions that are anything but great. We’re living in an age that is addicted to talk.

The Bible warns against many forms of it.  Paul warned Timothy against fighting over words. I hope Timothy had more success following that advice than many of us Christians today have!

I think it is important to notice that Jesus did not preach about a wide variety of topics. He did not catalog dozens of sins. I take comfort in the simplicity of His word. I think He was saying, “Be sure of these few things and do not trouble yourselves so much with the rest. And above all, love God and love your neighbor.” Surely that is enough of a challenge, enough for us to work on!

Prayer
Dear Lord, Thank you for the truth and simplicity of the Word, as delivered to us by your beloved Son. Let us take His perfectly focused speech as a role model for our daily communications. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
